The arrival of a very dry and cold air mass in Spain will bring completely winter weather with frosts and below-zero temperatures in much of the country. This situation is expected to persist at least until next Friday. Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures will start to rise again, especially from Sunday onwards, as indicated by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

“The temperatures will tend to rise, especially the minimums, as the fronts approach. As a result, frosts will lose extent and intensity, although they will still affect large areas of the interior,” details Aemet on its website."

Until then, the week will be marked by the arrival of the cold air mass that will likely set a record this Tuesday, when the coldest early morning of the winter so far is expected to be recorded.

This Tuesday, cold weather is expected in both inland areas and coastal areas of the Mediterranean such as Tarragona, Castellón, or Valencia, where temperatures can drop to below 2 degrees. Early in the morning, moderate to locally strong frosts have already been reported in the northeastern part of the Iberian Peninsula, the interior of Andalucía, both plateaus, and the surrounding mountains.

For tomorrow, Wednesday, frosts will continue in inland areas with temperatures dropping to 5 degrees below zero in the northern plateau and in moors in the central area, with milder frosts in areas near the coast and on the island of Mallorca. Daytime temperatures will also be slightly warmer than the previous day, although still below 10 degrees in northern areas. In the rest of the regions, temperatures are expected to rise slightly.

The cold weather will persist until Thursday: widespread frosts less intense than in previous days and a colder daytime environment in the eastern part of the peninsula, where instability will increase due to the arrival of a cut-off low from the Mediterranean without serious consequences, anticipates Aemet's spokesperson, Rubén del Campo.

The arrival of the dana will indeed bring thunderstorm showers to the Mediterranean area, while the rest of the country will continue to have partly cloudy skies.

Few changes for Friday, where Mediterranean rains could spread inland towards the easternmost part of the peninsula, with snow even in mountains in that area.

Forecast

Rising temperatures for the weekend

The wintry weather will give way starting this weekend. The dana will move away, making way for stable weather in most of Spain and temperatures will gradually recover. On Saturday, the maximum temperatures will increase in the eastern half, while in the rest of the country, no significant changes are expected. On Sunday, the rise will be more pronounced, especially in the minimum temperatures.
