The Atlàntida Film Fest is set to celebrate its 14th edition in style. The film festival in Palma de Mallorca, taking place between July 19th and 28th, will feature prominent stars from the national and international film industry. Michael Douglas, a fan of the island, will receive one of the Masters of Cinema awards presented by the festival. Also receiving this accolade are actress Liv Ullmann and Spanish directors JA Bayona and Montxo Armendáriz.
Haunted heart, the new film by Fernando Trueba, will be the opening film of the new edition of the festival. Aida Folch plays a young woman who settles on a remote island and falls in love with a man with a dark past played by Matt Dillon. The lead couple and the director will travel to Mallorca to present the film.
In the official section of the Atlàntida, 13 Spanish films will participate such as Al margen, the first documentary directed by Eduardo Casanova; Solos en la noche, where Guillermo Rojas travels to the 1981 coup d'état, and Un lugar común, by Celia Giraldo, with Eva Llorach leading the cast. Georgina Amorós, Llucia Ramis, and Gaël Nouaille will make up the jury.
And in the international chapter, Without Air by Katalin Moldovai, a Hungarian drama about intolerance; Spirit of Ecstasy, a film by Héléna Klotz that tells the story of a teenage girl who becomes wealthy in the financial world; or The Fantastic Three by Michaël Dichter, another drama about childhood, will compete. The jury for this section will be composed of Greta Fernández, Berta Prieto, Alauda Ruiz de Azúa, and three young students.
In addition, the contest features a Premiere section that will showcase titles like Seven Veils, directed by Atom Egoyan, where Amanda Seyfried becomes a theater director haunted by her past. The renowned French actress Noémie Merlant has transitioned to directing and directs and stars in The Balconettes, a thriller where voyeurism leads to tragic consequences.
In that same section, the Atlàntida will screen the romantic musical Carmen, directed by Benjamin Millepied, making his debut as a director in this film. A literary classic featuring performances by Paul Mescal, Melissa Barrera, and Rossy de Palma, with police chases and songs by Julieta Venegas.
The festival will also pay tribute to Montxo Armendáriz with the screening of Historias del Kronen and will present the latest film by Jonás Trueba, Volveréis, which was awarded at Cannes. The Atlántida will complement its cultural offer with music and discussions, dedicating a series to the work of Chantal Akerman.
